Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli today warned his Cabinet colleagues not to reveal Cabinet decisions until the government spokesperson did so.

In today’s Cabinet meeting, the PM reminded his colleagues that the last Cabinet meeting had decided that only Minister of Communications and Information Technology Gokul Prasad Baskota, who is the government spokesperson, would reveal Cabinet decisions to the media.

Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission Anup Raj Sharma today said the new penal code contained ambiguous words that could be used to punish journalists.

He said this at an interaction organised by the NHRC to dwell on issues related to the freedom of expression.

But this very nature of the social media—its ability to transmit information in real time and mobilise crowds — has stirred fears among those in authority and has fostered newer modes of surveillance and censorship.

Much talk on Nepali media has centered around growth story following the reestablishment of democracy in 1990. Many commentaries have been published citing the exponential growth of media culminating into industry like structure. Of course, the early years of 1990s did represent era of hope not just for the media but for the nascent democratic setup of the country. But there are other dynamics to it too.
